Artificial Intelligence has made a meteoric appearance on the world scene. It is fascinating, frightening, and far-reaching. Some laud it as the most significant development that will shape our lives and our cultures, changing our understanding of what it means to be human. Others fear that, even if it is regulated, a destructive power will be unleashed that no one will be able to control. Already, we are seeing evidence that supports both of these views - from fake videos, to AI-generated college essays to its incredible use in medical research.

Our faith tradition does not operate from a position of fear, knowing that anything that is created by human beings can be used for good or ill. Atomic energy can provide power that builds, enhances, and enables people to develop; atomic weapons carry the potential to destroy the entire planet. What our faith provides is a lens of discernment: what empowers and enhances human dignity and what diminishes it? What works for the Common Good and what is twisted for economic, political, or personal gain? What builds up and what destroys?

Our task is to engage university students to use AI ethically and responsibly. We need academic standards as guidelines and professors who can creatively incorporate AI in the learning experience. Central to our educational mission at Chaminade University is the dignity of the human person, freedom and responsibility, and the “Priority of Christ”, the Logos of God.
